My review
A very good introductory book for Stained Glass.
Nothing can compare to taking an in person class at a local studio or school - but if there are none in the area, this is your best next bet.

My rating
Description
Compact Design is Easy to Carry. Widely Used in the Industry. This smaller version of our CRL 3410 pliers is compact so it fits in your pocket. This plier can be used for plate or stained glass work. A good all-around plier for general use. Made from heat treated steel, they were designed to stand up to everyday use on glass and mirror. Color: Black Steel Length: 6-1/2 in (24.1 mm). Buy from TechnologyLK.
My review
It's very important to buy a good quality pair of combination pliers when building your own home studio. Cheaper models tend to be alot harsher on the delicate glass you are trying to properly break, and end up heavily chipping edged making for much harder foiling and soldering down the line.
In addition, good pliers will last a long time making the investment well worth it. Just make sure to keep the joint properly lubricated, and avoid any conditions that would cause the metal to rust. If you can't find this one, check out Fan Out brand pliers.

G43882 - 18" Cork-Backed Stainless Steel Rule
Added Apr 23, 2008
My rating
My review
While nothing spectacular, a cork-barked ruler is a very necessary part of a stained glass home studio. Without the cork backing, the metal ruler will slide and scratch the glass you place it on.
18" is a good all-purpose starting length - if you plan to work with larger sheets of glass, you may need to look into buying a 48" rule, but that's a rare case - more useful in professional sheet cutting.

My review
For stained glass use, you will need a pen that an write on glass for many purposes; most notably, to outline the pattern of the pieces you are trying to create before cutting them.
Suprisingly, finding a good pen to write on glass is quite the feat. Paint based pens, while good at first, can get very messy and dry up easily even if you take good care of them. Overall a good quality pen for any glass project.

My review
There are not many choices that I have seen in the stained glass flux department. Canfield (which also makes the solder I recommend) Soldermage 11 is a basic, good quality chemical.
Just remember, it's very important to thoroughly clean off any excess liquid after soldering. Not doing so is the main cause of that white powdery build up that you see on solder joints after your finished project sits out in open air. Also, keep in mind there are some US restrictions for shipping these types of chemicals. I don't think they have to be shipped via ground?

Inland Soldering Iron Stand
Added Apr 23, 2008 from sgw.net
My rating
Description
Safely hold your soldering iron and prevent burning your hands and work area. A heavy cast metal base prevents your iron from tipping over and a convenient sponge helps keep your soldering tip clean. The Inland soldering iron stand will hold both Inland and Weller soldering irons.
My review
Not the most important decision you have to make when building your stained glass home studio, but a definite necessity. Without it, placing your soldering iron directly on your work surface will cause damage to it's expensive tips. To further the aid of tip cleanliness, this stand also has a convenient spot to place a wet wiping sponge (don't use a generic kitchen sponge, as those will burn).
Inland creates a pretty decent quality stand in these regards.

My review
A good soldering iron is an important piece to your stained glass home studio. This Weller iron is a very good quality and value. While 80W models are also sufficient, 100W gives you enough power to easily and quickly manipulate any type of solder.
If you're tight on money, going with the 80W model isn't the worst thing in the world, but any professional will always have the 100W.

My review
One of the priciest items in building your own stained glass home studio, and as such, can be the most difficult buying decision. This Wizard IV Grinder is a bit pricey, but is well worth the tag, as it is a very quality piece of machinery.
Add a foot pedal for even more convenience, and you'll be grinding away like a pro in no time.
