Lorene Drive is so underground that they self-released their latest EP. Meaning, it's only available from for electronic download from SnoCap (popular mySpace plugin) or iTunes, and can't be gotten in hard copy (yet, I guess?).

This is only a 5 song EP, but has some really great tracks. There are many a times where I'm walking down the street with one of these songs stuck in my head (but in a good way! Not the crappy pop-song way).

Frame and Canvas [by Braid, CD, 1998]     Added May 14, 2008

My review
Classified as emo, but not nearly hard enough to be so in my book. I define Braid as another indie rock bank, but with enough uniquness in style to stand out from the rest of the pack.

Quality tracks such as "New Nathan Detroits" and "Dozen Roses" make this their best release by far. Unfortunately, they had quite the large amount of personnel drama, and broke-up around 1999; making their undergound music career relatively short lived.

Solid underground indie rock band. Rainer Maria has gone through many different sounds during their time together, and this release, albeit only 3 songs, is probably my favorite style of theirs. Singer (and bassist), Caithlin De Marrais, has a wonderful voice and takes the reigns in most of these Ears Ring tracks. Most importantly, my favorite song of theirs, Automatic, is on this EP.

If you are a fan of Jimmy Eat World or Braid, Rainer Maria is a good underground alternative to try out.

Very good traditional rock band. If you are a fan of such bands as Creed and Pearl Jam, there is a good chance that you will like Chevelle. They also have an earlier release called "Wonder What's Next" which most people consider their best album.

Compared to the complex psyche of Del and the Souls of Mischief's interwoven rhyme schemes, Casual was the most conventional of the Bay Area's Hieroglyphics, yet few would to be foolish enough to dismiss him as any average MC. The very essence of ... more
My review
Very good old school west coast rapper. Casual was big on the skateboarding scene, as he has been featured on several professional team demo videos.

Really underground hard alternative band that I found on emusic.com. They hardly ever tour outside of their local Cali town. Great energy, lyrics and style.

They just came out with a new EP named "Showing Bones", which is a bit more hard-rock oriented.

Description
Digable Planets deliberately disavowed the toughness of hip-hop culture: the trio's leader called himself Butterfly, his foil Ladybug purred like Eartha Kitt, and they produced hooks out of lines like "We're just babies, man." Despite occasional flashes of sorrow (like the pro-choice recitation "La Femme Fetal"), the group's happy and laidback on this debut, with tracks made out of old jazz records and finger-snaps, and words that draw on 50s hipster slang. Reachin' spawned the Grammy-winning single "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," and after this album, their joyous Blue Note-and-black-lights bounce lost some of its novelty. --Douglas Wolk
My review
Not the most underground hip-hop group, but alot of people have never heard of 'em. Real chill, funky beats and flow, similar to old-school De La Soul, but a bit more youthful.

Really great "neo-soul/RB" album. Similar to John Legend in style, Rahsaan Patterson puts together a really solid release from start to end.
