Cloverfield (2008) [DVD]
Added Apr 15, 2008
My rating
Description
Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal horrifying event of their lives.
My review
This movie Cloverfield is f'ing scary. I wouldn't watch it alone, with friends, in a dark room, in a lighted room or in a movie theater.
The monster will come and get us all!

Enchanted (2007) [DVD, Widescreen]

Description
A fairy tale comes to life in this thoroughly original new Disney Classic. Drawing inspiration from its classic heritage Disney creates an inspired story unlike any you' ve experienced before. Filled with excitement fun and incredible music from the legendary Alan Menken ENCHANTED is the ultimate fish-out-of-water adventure. For princess-to-be Giselle life is a fairy tale -- until she' s banished from the animated land of Andalasia and thrust into the very unmagical live-action worl

The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) [DVD]
Added Apr 15, 2008
My rating
Description
Jim Henson's Muppets find themselves in Manhattan yearning to get a musical on Broadway in this charming film that also chides show business and its foibles. Kermit the Frog has just put together a successful variety show at Danhurst college (probably somewhere between Amherst and Dartmouth), and although he would like to mount it on Broadway so he would have a hit and be able to marry Miss Piggy, he cannot find backers. The Muppets are then forced to take jobs to support themselves, and it is while working as a waiter that Kermit meets the friendly Jennie (Juliana Donald). Jennie is the daughter of the owner of the restaurant and a source of great jealousy for Miss Piggy, who does not like competition. With stunning musical numbers involving a hundred or so Muppets and on-scene locations in New York City, the film is impressive in its merging of technical achievements and acting.
My review
The Muppets Take Manhattan is an absolute classic. I loved it growing up and I still love it now.
The love story between Miss Piggy and Kermit is timeless.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) [DVD, Sensormatic]
Added Apr 15, 2008
My rating
Description
This somewhat unpleasant 1992 sequel to the blockbuster Home Alone revisits the first film's gimmick by stranding Macaulay Culkin's character in New York City while his family ends up somewhere else. Again, the little guy meets up with colorful people on the margins of society (including a pigeon woman played by Brenda Fricker) and again he gets into a prop-heavy battle with Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. The latter sequence is even worse than the first film in terms of violence inflicted on the two villains (director Chris Columbus, who also made the first film, can't seem to emphasize the slapstick over the graphic effects of the fight). The best running joke finds a concierge (Tim Curry) at the swank hotel where Culkin is staying trying and failing to prove that the boy is on his own. --Tom Keogh
My review
Oh, Kevin McAllister! When will you learn?
Home Alone 2 is exactly what living in New York City is like. You're often chased by Joe Peschi and your best friends are crazy bird ladies who live in Central Park.

Maid in Manhattan (2002) [DVD]
Added Apr 15, 2008
My rating
Description
A struggling single mother who works at a posh Manhattan hotel dreams of a better life for her young son and herself. One fateful day, a senatorial candidate meets her and mistakes her for a wealthy socialite. After an enchanting evening together, the two fall madly in love. But when the woman's true identity is revealed, issues of class and social status threaten to separate them.
My review
These two movies are the best movies ever created. Maid in Manhattan is a cautionary tale of why you should never marry a maid. Fools Rush In is also great, but only because Selma Hayek is perfect in every way.

Shot entirely in black and white, "Manhattan" is a quintessential Woody Allen film. It also captures perfectly why New York is one of the world's greatest cities.
Doesn't get any better than this.
