The great thing about SLRs over point-and-shoot is the expandable nature based on how serious a photographer you are. If you're like me, and just want quality shots of general everyday things (vacations, kids, etc), then getting an entry level SLR with a kit lens should be more than enough. But if you're a serious photographer that wants extremely high-quality images, and the ability to adjust the raw image files, then you can buy just the body and a high-end lens. SLRs are also faster than point and shoot so you can get multiple shots quickly - or get a shot of that toddler that won't sit still for long. The main drawback is that they're big, so they're not as convenient for the night-on-the-town pictures.
