About Betsey Johnson
Ever since the 1960s, Betsey Johnson has been cart-wheeling through the fashion world, animating the runways with her whimsical, funky designs. Originally a dancer, Betsey got her start by winning a guest editor contest at Mademoiselle magazine, followed by a design position at top New York boutique Paraphernalia. Soon, the young designer became wrapped up in the youthquake fashion movement of the 1960s and the underground Warhol scene. She developed her signature style during this time of hippie-inspired fabrics, form-fitting silhouettes and quirky prints and detailing. Her first boutique called Betsey Bunki Nini opened in 1969 on New York's Upper East Side. In 1978, Betsey launched her own label, Betsey Johnson, and opened her first boutique in Soho. This store was followed by one on Melrose Avenue in L.A., then several others in the states, then London, Vancouver, Toronto, and Japan. Today there are over 65 Betsey Johnson stores worldwide.
Showing an incredible ability to adjust with the times and remain relevant, Betsey is still heavily involved with the design process and workings of her company. Betsey has expanded her brand to include the more affordable Betseyville line of handbags and accessories, as well as lingerie, footwear, fragrances, eyewear, belts, watches, swimwear, and costume jewelry. Her sassy, playful designs are still inspired by her dancer's background, her trademark style being a leotard top and a flared tutu bottom. Tulle, lace, floral prints and ruffles are all Betsey staples. Betsey Johnson is a breast cancer survivor, and continues to be a strong advocate in the fight against the disease. She participates in fundraising events, designs unique pieces to be auctioned off, and makes numerous public appearances. Betsey's boundless energy will no doubt keep her at the fashion forefront for years to come.
