Film Scanners Film scanners are specifically designed to allow the user to scan film. There are different types of film scanners depending on what kinds of film you are looking to scan, like 35mm, slides, or monochrome film. Fingerprint Fingerprint scanners are used to read and recognize fingerprints. Flatbed Flatbed scanners have a flat glass plate over the scanning device onto which you place the image to be scanned. A cover is brought down on top of the image (much like a xerox machine), and then the actual scanning elements move beneath the image, within the machine, to capture and record it. Handheld Handheld scanners can refer to scanners with several different uses. One type is a small, portable document scanner. Other types include UPC code readers and business card scanners. Pass-Through Pass-Through scanners are essentially similar to flatbed scanners. While the mechanics inside a flatbed scanner move around to read the image, the image in a pass-through scanner is pulled across the unmoving scanning mechanism. |

Different scanners use different interfaces (basically wire jacks and connections) to connect to other devices, such as your computer. Some interfaces are able to transmit data faster than others - but the most important factor is making sure the interface of the scanner matches that of the device you want to use it with. |

Interpolated resolution is the ability of the scanner to "fill-in" spaces between scanned dots. When interpolated resolution is very high, it means that the scanner and its software work well to produce an image that can be greatly enlarged. |

Platform is a term synonym for Operating System (e.g., Windows or Macintosh). It is important that your scanner match the operating system of the computer you intend to use it with. |

Color depth is also known as "bit depth". This is the number of bits used to represent each pixel. The greater the bit depth, the more colors that can be seen in the image. Bit depths of 24 (equal to about 16 million colors) and higher are considered especially high. 8-bit color is 256 colors, and 16-bit color represents about 65,000 colors. While 8 is probably low for the average consumer, 24 is probably plenty. |

Form Factor describes the physical attributes and intended use for your printer. Desktop scanners are the most standard type of scanner, and stationary scanners are similar. There are also portable scanners available that are often much smaller than other scanners, and are easier for use outside of an office. Plug-in and handheld models are specialty models used by specific industries. |

Max. gray depth is the maximum number of shades of gray that the scanner can reproduce. Like color depth, gray depth is measured in bits. This is a measurement of how well the colors are rendered, i.e. how "accurate" the colors are in comparison to the scanned original. |
