Maximum Screen Resolution indicates the maxiumum possible sharpness and clarity of an image that a monitor can display, measured in number of dots (pixels). For example, a screen with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels can display up to 640 distinct dots on each of 480 lines, or about 300,000 pixels. The resolution translates into different dots per inch (dpi) measurements depending on the size of the screen. For example, a 15-inch VGA monitor (640 x 480 pixels) displays about 50 dots per inch. The higher the monitor's resolution, the greater the sharpness and clarity. |

Displays come in a few different types. A standard CRT is the most common type of monitor and widely used. They are also the most cost-effective. LCD and TFT monitors have a flat tube so they take up less desk space. They are more expensive than CRTs, but have recently dropped in price. |
